Effective May 1st, I am no longer a window washer. On to bigger and better things!
The plan is to work towards one of my dream jobs, Firefighting. Ideally get my knee back to 100%, in September go to Seattle to get my EMT certification ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! emergency-medical-technician), look for a job in a firehouse and hopefully manage to fit in time for an associates degree in fire sciences. And go from there.
It’s an incredibly difficult field to get into in my area, unless you’re a minority, top of your class AND have connections. So... Sounds like moving to a smaller town, or maybe Oregon/California might prove to be beneficial, as far as getting a foot in the door goes.
Still very much in the preliminary stages of planning here. Any tips or relevant info you have would be greatly appreciated

My father was a fire fighter for 30+ years, uncle was in 10, cousin currently in Bellevue, my suggestion is go East. You’ll need your fire science degree before anyone takes a look at you and yes based on the current hiring models there are only so many spots for white males. Women and minorities are about 75% of the hires per class year. Smaller municipalities have fewer restrictions.

I was thinking about the Wenatchee area. Hmm... Sounds like it might be best to focus on the fire science degree before EMT training

My wife’s uncle works for some FD around here. I’d need to ask where and which one, but I think he works (or worked) at Woodinville along Bear Creek Rd.
Why did you decide to sell your business?

Doesn’t that job have an unsually high suicide rate and is generally awful and stressful?

The bear creek firehouse would basically be my dream location. I’m around there all the time for work at the country club and trilogy.
Yep. Been working on the deal for the past two months, after talking about it casually for about a year. Finalized everything yesterday and the company will be out of my hands on May 1st. Now I just need to tidy some things up and train one more employee for the transfer. Might do a longer post at some point with more details

Wenatchee is a cool town. If you can swing both at the same time you’ll be in good shape. There’s always chandelier inspections...

It looks like my firm is hiring for an admin role. Good opportunity to get in the door of the industry. They pay well, good benefits and pay your education if you want to move forward.

My friend works for Sno. 1 as a field paramedic. It is a very, very competitive field and takes years to break into a good position... People burnout all the time, good ones have to work shit jobs with shit pay while they apply to any firehouse an open position pretty much anywhere in the state... Training out of states, long commutes, long hours... And then there’s the job itself. You won’t be putting out many fires. You’ll mostly get to witness truly horrifying things. Suicide is also a higher risk for the occupation for obvious reasons.
Just... Something to think about.

But the payoff. I’m definitely worried about the shit jobs making less money than I could support myself on while trying to get in... Looks like EMT’s in Seattle sometimes start below $15/hr... But talking with a few who did make it... Everything from the schedule to the community sounds like something I want. As much as I love Washington, and the east side... At this point with the housing market I’d consider moving away to be a plus. I spent some time in emergency rooms when I was pursuing nursing years ago. I think the things I saw and did there would prepare me fairly well for being a first responder

Yes. I’m selling to a larger company, the owner of which is a good friend of mine. But it’s geographically based so I suppose I could start something in another area...

Spent a few days exploring the area, living out of a Wrx with a friend years ago. Late August—so hot—but with a nice breeze. Loved that town a lot more than I would have expected.
Is there room for two chandelier inspectors on Oppo..? I just don’t know

Check out the Air Force. I don’t know the other services, but they have a dedicated fire fighting track. Also, it’s the best service to get into. It’s a good way to get the job, and experience, and if you can put out a burning jet aircraft, you can put out just about anything. I’ll ask my brother for the PCS terms to ask about. It doesn’t hurt to ask.

I have set a great many things on fire. I have used a great, great many different things to set these fires....
My fires usually burn themselves out, though. Usually spectacularly...

I’ve made my fair share of sparkler bombs and mortor-based fireworks, but I’ll keep that to myself on any applications.
Boy is it nice living near an Indian reservation though

Some big names and industry heads, along with plenty of “normal” multimillionaires. So yeah... I guess it has been a pretty wild ride getting to that point. I’ll try to put together a halfway decent piece on all of it

My dad was a Seattle firefighter when I was a kid but later changed careers...I suppose anything he knows is probably way out of date. But I have a friend who is a Seattle FD paramedic, I could pass along some questions next time I see him if you want.

Heh. no...
Too low in frequency to adequately couple to organic materials, that one.
